Fujikawa Maru Aircraft ferry
The ship: A cargo ship used by the Imperial Japanese Navy as an armed aircraft ferry: 6,938 tons and 437 ft (133 m) long (Pacific Wrecks), built in 1938 (DIVE).
Depth: Upright, from about 9 m to 37 m (Shearwater); the deck is at about 21 m (70 ft) and the keel at about 40 m (130 ft), and the mast tips almost break the surface (Pacific Wrecks). Within recreational limits (Shearwater).
Look for: The coral-covered bow gun, with an 1899 British maker’s plate (DIVE); Zero fighter fuselages and wings in the holds, with engines, propellers and torpedoes in Hold 1 (DIVE); and the machine shop with the air compressor divers call “R2D2” (Bluewater 2026). Grey reef sharks, bigeye trevally, chevron barracuda and batfish have been reported on the wreck (Wetpixel).
Take care: The superstructure is collapsing (DIVE). A liveaboard captain has asked divers not to request the swim-through to R2D2 because it is unsafe (Wetpixel).
